Forms Of Medical Waste Disposal Tn

By Kenya Campos

Getting rid of medical wastes is a necessity for many firms. There are five main ways of medical waste disposal tn residents can consider. These are incineration, using autoclaves, chemical disinfection, use of microwaves and irradiation. For all the treatment types, the wastes involved can be generally disposed using general waste in a landfill. At certain times, they can be discharged into sewer systems. Previously, medical waste treatment and disposal was done on-site at hospitals in dedicated facilities.

The treatment from hospitals has however changed over time due to the expenses incurred and the regulations in place. Private companies are preferred for collection, treatment and disposal of medical waste. Organizations doing their own treatment are few. In order that every method used offers the proper environment for destruction of biologicals, there is the use of test packages that contain microbiological spore test indicators. These are used to test effectiveness of methods used. The microbiological spores are the toughest biological to get rid of.

Incineration is the most widely used method to get rid of wastes. It refers to the controlled burning of wastes in dedicated incinerators. Movement of the wastes into the facility is facilitated by belts. There is never the need to sort the materials before being passed into the incinerator. Incineration greatly reduces the volume of wastes, which is among the biggest benefits of the technique. Further, they are sterilized and there is no need to pre-process them before treatment.

Modern incinerators have the added benefit of harnessing the created heat to boilers found in the facility. The resulting flames in the primary chamber are able to ignite fossil fuels in a secondary chamber and thus power boilers. Pollution is the biggest concern associated with incineration. There is the possibility of production of toxic gases.

An autoclave is a chamber which is closed and pressure and heat applied inside for the purpose of sterilization. At times even steam is applied. It has been in use for many years and is used in destroying pathogens before the matter is dumped into landfills. In order to reduce time taken for steam generation, pressure within the device is lowered. Mechanical processes like shredding are used to compact the wastes in a way that that they cannot be recognized. They thus cannot be mistaken and misused for other purposes.

Another common mode of disposal is through chemical disinfection. This involves the use of chlorine products. The fact that it offers consistency and control of the process explains why it is mostly used. It however is mostly used for liquid waste disposal. To ensure sufficient exposure of wastes to the chemicals used, it is normally used in combination with mechanical processes like shredding.

Using microwaves is a relatively new procedure. The treatment units can either be mobile or on-site. The wastes are first shredded then mixed with water before being subjected to microwaves. The wastes are internally heated by the microwaves. The produced heat provides even heating on every portion of the wastes. The generated steam is of high temperature and neutralizes all biologicals.

Irradiation involves exposing wastes to a cobalt source. There is generation of gamma radiation by the cobalt source which inactivates all the microbes present in the waste material. This technique requires dedicated sites.
